Seven signs a commercial beer python may need replacement
How to distinguish an isolated repair from ageing, wet or inaccessible python failure.
1. Warm first pours keep returning
If product warms while sitting in the line, the first pour after a quiet period may foam or require disposal. Confirm chiller temperature and circulation before blaming the python, but repeated localised warm-first-pour problems justify route and insulation checks.
2. Condensation appears along the route
Sweating at penetrations, ceilings, bulkheads or behind the bar indicates that cold surfaces are meeting humid air. Damaged vapour sealing, compressed insulation or gaps around fittings are common contributors.
3. The insulation is wet
Once moisture enters the insulation, thermal performance falls and corrosion risk rises. A small visible wet area may not show the full extent of saturation inside a concealed route.
4. Tap temperatures vary across the same bar
Different product temperatures can result from cooling-line layout, poor contact within the bundle, flow problems or local route damage. Measure before deciding whether the python or circulation system is responsible.
5. The outer jacket is damaged or crushed
Building works, tight supports and poor access can crush insulation or product lines. Deformed sections may restrict flow and create permanent heat-gain points.
6. Repairs are becoming repetitive
Repeated patching can be false economy where the bundle is old, inaccessible or widely saturated. Compare the accumulated repair and product-waste cost with planned replacement.
7. The venue is renovating or adding products
A renovation creates an opportunity to correct route, capacity, line identification and access before new ceilings and finishes close. Retaining an unsuitable python can lock old constraints into a new bar.
Confirm the whole system first
Warm beer and foam can also be caused by keg-room temperature, chiller performance, pumps, fonts, gas pressure or line balance. Replacement should follow evidence that the python is a material constraint.
