Pressure has more than one job

Gas pressure moves product from keg to tap and helps maintain the intended carbonation. The correct setting depends on product, temperature, elevation, line resistance and dispensing method.

A single generic pressure is not suitable for every product or venue. Settings should be established during commissioning and recorded.

Temperature changes the equation

Warmer beer releases dissolved gas more readily, increasing foam. Staff may respond by altering pressure, but that treats the symptom rather than the temperature fault.

Confirm stable product temperature before adjusting system balance. Otherwise the new setting may fail when cooling is restored.

Line resistance controls flow

Product line diameter, length, fittings, vertical rise and restriction devices determine how pressure is reduced before the tap. The goal is controlled flow without gas breaking out in the line.

Renovations that lengthen a run or move a keg room can upset the original balance even when the same taps and regulators remain.

Mixed products need deliberate settings

Different carbonation levels and serving requirements may require separate regulators or pressure zones. Connecting incompatible products to one compromise setting creates recurring quality problems.

Document which regulator supplies each product and prevent casual changes. Labels are a simple control with substantial value.

Symptoms of poor balance

Excessive foam, slow flow, bubbles in the line, over-carbonated product and inconsistent performance between taps can all reflect balance issues. They can also reflect temperature or component faults.

Measure before changing. A systematic check of temperature, pressure and physical line arrangement is faster than repeated trial-and-error adjustments.

Protect the approved setup

Restrict regulator adjustment to trained staff or service technicians. Record normal settings and investigate any need for repeated change.

If the venue frequently changes products, establish a changeover process that includes suitability of pressure, coupler, line and cleaning requirements.
