Engage the specialist early

Beer-system routes and services are often decided after joinery, ceilings and refrigeration layouts are largely fixed. That creates longer product runs, difficult access and avoidable penetrations.

Engage the beer-system contractor during design development, not at final fit-off. Early input is inexpensive and gives the architect, builder and services trades clear requirements.

Freeze the operating brief

Confirm product count, tap count, expected volume, keg location, bars served and future expansion. Separate opening-day requirements from possible future additions.

A documented brief prevents late assumptions by suppliers and gives the project team a basis for assessing variations.

Coordinate builder-supplied services

Identify responsibility for electrical circuits, drainage, ventilation, plinths, penetrations, supports and builder access. Show each item on coordinated drawings.

Do not rely on notes such as provide services as required. State locations, capacities and dates needed so missing work is visible before fit-off.

Protect commissioning time

The system needs power, refrigeration, completed lines, gas, water where required and access to every bar before commissioning can occur. Product and trained venue representatives may also be needed.

Build realistic commissioning time into the program. A rushed test on an incomplete site transfers unresolved defects into opening week.

Manage interfaces and warranty

Record which contractor owns each component and connection. Where possible, use one coordinated group for beer, refrigeration and electrical work to reduce disputed boundaries.

Handover should include asset details, settings, warranties, operating instructions, cleaning requirements and service contacts.

Plan for post-opening load

A quiet commissioning period does not replicate a full venue. Arrange a post-opening review after the system has experienced peak demand.

Use temperature and wastage observations from actual trade to fine-tune balance and identify operational issues before they become accepted as normal.
