How to choose a commercial glycol chiller
The factors that determine glycol-chiller capacity, reliability and whole-of-life cost.

Define the cooling duty
Chiller selection starts with a calculated load. Required fluid temperature, heat input, ambient conditions, operating hours and expected peak demand must all be defined.
Nameplate capacity is meaningful only at stated conditions. A chiller may deliver substantially less capacity at a lower fluid temperature or higher ambient temperature than the headline rating suggests.
Assess the hydraulic circuit
Pump flow and pressure must suit the total pipe length, height, fittings, manifolds and equipment resistance. Oversized and undersized pumps both create problems.
Confirm glycol concentration and fluid properties because viscosity affects pumping performance. The hydraulic design must match the chiller, not be treated as a separate afterthought.
Plan for Queensland heat rejection
Air-cooled equipment needs clean, unrestricted airflow and suitable clearance. Plant rooms and enclosed service areas can recirculate hot discharge air and drive high-pressure faults.
Check the rated ambient range and the actual summer conditions at the proposed location. Shade can help, but enclosure without ventilation can make performance worse.
Consider redundancy and trading risk
For a high-volume venue or brewery, the cost of lost cooling may justify staged capacity, standby pumping or an agreed contingency plan. Redundancy should be based on business interruption exposure.
Identify which components are locally supported and how quickly critical parts can be obtained. A lower purchase price may be poor value if a proprietary component creates a long outage.
Specify controls and monitoring
Controls should make operating temperature, alarms and pump status visible. Remote alerts may be worthwhile where the system is critical and unattended faults can damage product.
Agree who receives alarms and what they must do. Monitoring without a response process only provides a record of the failure.
Compare whole-of-life cost
Include energy use, maintenance access, warranty, parts support and expected service life. A correctly selected chiller should operate with reasonable cycling and recovery rather than remaining at maximum output continuously.
Ask for the design assumptions in writing. They become the benchmark for commissioning and future fault diagnosis.
