Commercial keg room design: what venues get wrong
The refrigeration, access and operating decisions that determine whether a keg room works under real trading conditions.

Size for inventory and movement
The room needs space for the intended keg stock, safe handling, coupler access and air circulation. A room that technically fits the keg count can still be operationally unusable.
Allow for empty-keg staging and delivery movement. Repeatedly holding the door open because staff cannot move stock efficiently adds heat and extends refrigeration run time.
Calculate the real heat load
The refrigeration load includes warm product deliveries, door openings, lighting, people, surrounding ambient conditions and heat transmitted through the envelope. Queensland conditions make condenser location and heat rejection particularly important.
A system selected only from room volume may be underpowered for the operating pattern. Give the designer delivery temperature, delivery volume and expected door use.
Protect airflow
Evaporators need clear intake and discharge paths. Stock packed against the coil or ceiling can create warm zones even when the controller appears normal.
Mark keep-clear areas and provide practical shelving or storage rules. Airflow is an operating control as much as a design issue.
Plan drainage, hygiene and materials
Floors, wall finishes, penetrations and drainage should tolerate moisture and cleaning. Unsealed penetrations leak air and can allow condensation within the building fabric.
Locate drains where they can be accessed and cleaned. Do not allow product lines, electrical cables or pipework to create dirt traps or prevent proper cleaning.
Provide service access
Technicians need access to evaporators, valves, controls, drains and refrigeration equipment. Plant hidden above fixed joinery or blocked by stored kegs takes longer to diagnose and repair.
Serviceability should be reviewed before construction is finished. The cost of providing access during the build is far lower than altering the venue later.
Integrate the beer system
The keg room temperature, python route, glycol duty and gas arrangement must be coordinated. The shortest practical product route reduces heat gain and line volume.
Bring the beer-system contractor into the design before penetrations and ceilings are finalised. Late involvement usually means longer routes and avoidable compromises.
