The product highway between keg and tap

A beer python is an insulated bundle containing product lines and cooling lines. It carries beer from the keg room to the bar while circulating chilled glycol or water beside the product lines.

Its job is to limit heat gain along the route. Without effective cooling, product sitting between the keg room and tap warms and the venue discards foam or warm first pours.

Construction and line arrangement

The number and size of product lines must suit the product range and system balance. Cooling lines are arranged to transfer heat from the bundle and maintain more even temperature.

Insulation and vapour sealing are critical. Gaps, crushed sections and damaged jackets allow heat and moisture to enter, reducing performance and causing condensation.

Routing decisions have long-term consequences

Longer runs increase product volume, cleaning loss, heat gain and resistance. Vertical rise and bends also affect performance. The best route is short, accessible and protected from heat sources.

A python should not be installed against hot-water pipes, uninsulated roofs or equipment exhausts. Builder coordination is essential before ceilings and wall linings close.

Recognising python problems

Warm first pours, condensation, wet ceilings, isolated tap-temperature problems and uneven return temperatures can point to python or circulation issues.

A damaged section may be repairable, but inaccessible routes and saturated insulation can make replacement more economic. Diagnosis should confirm whether the fault is local or system-wide.

Design for cleaning and future changes

Line count should account for realistic product plans without creating excessive unused volume. Access points and clear identification make cleaning, fault finding and product changes easier.

Document the route and line allocation at handover. Accurate records save time when the venue renovates or adds products later.
